Is Food Art? October 21, 2009

In the article “Is Food Art?” the question and situation comes up of can chefs be considered as artist.  The article presents a situation I have never thought of, chefs being included in art shows. The art show in Germany only had two chefs invited to the famous art show,  Documenta. There was a controversy to if the chefs should be included in the show in the first place. Then the article goes into what classifies art as art. Why can certain things that people create be art but others are not?  Then the article compares how chefs are similar to other artist by their critics and everyone around them, pushing them to be better and create new things.

One thing that I saw in comparison to the article that I found and the ones provided was the definition of art. Last week we had the reading about how Dissanayake viewed art and how she coined the phrase “paleoanthropsychobiological” and how art does and can affect each part of the body that the word contains. In the article it defines art as something that moves and has an impact on a person. It also states that it is not up to a certain panel or selection of people to decide what should be considered as art. I agree with the both articles, because some people can look at something and based on their psyche and experience what art is to them. Some things that I consider artistic no one else would view or what I don’t think is artistic is to someone else. Therefore, the article “Food is Art” is correct when saying it is a piece of work that moves someone.

The other comparison that I challenge in the article is that the article implies that only gourmet food is artistic. While gourmet food is easily seen as the most beautiful and time consuming of the “types” of food , I don’t think that fast food should not be considered. Although both the article online and the ones provided suggest that fast food should not be viewed as artistic, but I believe that in can. It is a different type of artistic compared to gourmet but still could and should be considered as art.
